CREW'S QUARTERS

We've researched countless volumes of stacks of historical documents, covering everything we could about the Oriskany.  On this page, you'll find pictures taken from crewmen during their time aboard the Mighty O.  Hopefully, when you dive it, the ship may seem just a little more familiar to you, having taken on its own personality by mixing all the photos and stories below.   If you were stationed aboard and would like to submit pictures or stories, please pass them on.

Navy pilot Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Denny Earl, with both legs shattered by North Vietnamese anti-aircraft fire, successfully lands his A-4 Skyhawk attack plane aboard the Oriskany in the Gulf of Tonkin, 20 October 1967. The nylon emergency barrier assures the wounded pilot that he will not have to make more than one attempt to land his plane. This particular aircraft, BuNo 149959, was shot down over Hanoi six days later, 26 October. Its pilot, Lt. Cdr. John S. McCain III (grandson of WW2 carrier admiral John S. McCain), spent 5½ years as a POW in Vietnam; he was elected to the US Senate (R-AZ) in 1986.Photographed by PHC Neal Crowe. Official U.S. Navy Photograph (photo # K-42269).
